Coffee, Tea and a PhD - “Hear a Celtic race from their battle-place”: Irish and Scottish American Civil War Song Sentiments
Catherine Bateson explores the sentiments and experience of Irish-born and descended soldiers who fought in the American Civil War (1861-1865), focusing particularly on how these were expressed in the songs written by and about them during the conflict. It will look at the way songs sang of battles, Irish American understanding of the war and how soldiers articulated their evolving American identities. She will also talk about some of the Scottish songs and musical influence in America in the period and how Scottish cultural heritage was used to formulate war culture.
