Bearsden : The Story of A Roman Fort
David Breeze published the detailed report on his 10 years excavating the Roman fort at Bearsden on the Antonine Wall last year. He followed this by a 'popular' account of the work in which he set out to explain how archaeologists go about their business and what an excavation can tell us about life on the North-west frontier of the Roman empire. In this talk, David will also look at the research inspired by the Bearsden excavation.
David Breeze was formerly Chief Inspector of Ancient Monuments for Scotland. He is an honorary professor at the Universities of Durham, Edinburgh, Newcastle and Stirling and was awarded an honorary degree by Glasgow University. He has served as Chairman of the International Congress of Roman Frontier Studies as well as President of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. He is the author of the basic text book on Hadrian's Wall and of books on the Antonine Wall, Roman frontiers and the Roman army.
